Tomato Prices Push Thali Costs Higher: Crisil Report
According to Crisil's 'Roti Rice Rate' report, the price of vegetable thali rose by 11% in July 2024 from June, predominantly due to a surge in tomato prices. Non-veg thali also saw a price hike of 6%. However, yearly comparisons show a minor reduction in thali costs owing to last year's high tomato prices.
Consumers are facing a sharp increase in the price of vegetable thali, which saw an 11% rise in July 2024 compared to June, mainly due to soaring tomato prices, according to Crisil's 'Roti Rice Rate' report.
The cost of non-veg thali also went up by 6% during the same period. In contrast, year-over-year price comparisons indicated a 4% drop in vegetable thali prices due to the high base effect of last year's tomato prices, which soared following flash floods and pest infestations.
However, soaring onion and potato prices have somewhat offset this decrease. The report highlights that non-veg thali prices fell by 9% annually, thanks to a significant drop in broiler rates.
