India's Railways on Track for Net Zero Emissions by 2030

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the government's goal to achieve net zero emissions in rail operations by 2030. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw detailed multi-pronged approaches, including electric traction, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. A MoU with USAID/India supports this mission, highlighting long-term clean energy and regulatory initiatives.

The Indian government aims to achieve net zero emissions in railway operations by 2030, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Thursday during a speech marking India's 78th Independence Day from the Red Fort.

Highlighting various environmental initiatives, Modi emphasized a significant focus on rail operations. 'We are aiming to achieve net zero emission by 2030 in Railways,' he said.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also provided details in a Lok Sabha statement, noting a multi-faceted approach that includes transitioning from diesel to electric traction, acquiring renewable energy, and bolstering energy efficiency measures. These initiatives are expected to advance renewable energy technology and reduce dependency on imported fuels.

Additionally, Vaishnaw mentioned a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with USAID/India to support the railways' mission. The agreement focuses on clean energy planning, policy development, and overcoming regulatory hurdles. The MoU will be effective for five years or the duration of the USAID's South Asia Regional Energy Partnership program.

Efforts to develop environment-friendly fuel are ongoing, including a pilot project for retrofitting hydrogen fuel cells on Diesel Electric Multiple Unit rakes and converting diesel power cars to CNG-based propulsion systems.
