Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal underscored the immense potential for trade and investment between India and Africa across four key sectors: automobiles, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and logistics. Speaking at the India Africa Business Conclave, Barthwal noted that the bilateral trade stood at USD 100 billion in 2022, with a goal to reach USD 200 billion by 2030.
Barthwal emphasized that the African Continental Free Trade Area has identified these sectors as areas ripe for collaboration, particularly in terms of investment, trade, technology, and capacity building. He noted that in agriculture, there are significant opportunities in processed foods and seed technology.
Highlighting the pharmaceutical sector, Barthwal stated that India's exports to Africa amounted to USD 3.8 billion in 2023, presenting further opportunities to provide affordable medicines and healthcare in Africa. Additionally, critical minerals needed for green energy transitions position Africa as an essential supplier, while India's expertise in logistics can foster greater collaboration. Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations), called for better utilization of the duty-free tariff preference scheme by Africa and suggested Indian businesses consider manufacturing opportunities on the continent.
