Minister of State for Trade Nicola Grigg will travel to Laos this week to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Economic Ministers' Meetings in Vientiane. These meetings come as New Zealand approaches the 50th anniversary of its status as an ASEAN dialogue partner, underscoring the importance of the country's relationship with the region.
“Strengthening our relationship with ASEAN remains a priority for the Government,” said Ms Grigg. "With ASEAN being New Zealand’s third-largest trading partner, accounting for nearly 10% of our total exports, these meetings are a key opportunity to enhance our trade and economic collaboration."
Last year, New Zealand exported over $9 billion in goods and services to the 10 ASEAN countries. During her visit, Ms Grigg will also engage in discussions regarding the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), with an announcement expected on the entry into force of the AANZFTA Upgrade. This upgrade will modernize the agreement, streamline processes, and provide better conditions for investors and service providers.
Since the implementation of AANZFTA in 2010, New Zealand's exports to ASEAN have nearly doubled. The Government's goal of doubling the value of New Zealand’s exports over the next decade will be supported by this momentum.
"Trade is a critical driver of our economy, supporting growth across sectors and helping put more money in New Zealanders’ pockets,” Ms Grigg emphasized.
In addition to AANZFTA discussions, the Minister will attend meetings on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting.
