Ambuja Cements Joins Global Alliance for Net Zero Transition

Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has become the first cement manufacturer to join the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization. The company aims to achieve Net Zero by 2050, planning significant investments in renewable energy. This move supports global efforts to curb emissions and promotes industry sustainability.

Ambuja Cements, a prominent company under the Adani Group, has officially joined the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID), becoming the first cement manufacturer to participate in this global coalition. The AFID seeks to expedite the transition to Net Zero emissions consistent with the Paris Agreement, fostering a platform for exchanging innovative practices and experiences among both public and private stakeholders.

Striving to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050, Ambuja Cements' targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). As part of its ambitious green energy plans, the company plans to invest Rs 100 billion in renewable energy projects, aiming for 1GW capacity and 376 MW from Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS). This would enable 60 percent of its upgraded capacity to be powered by green energy by FY2028.

Ambuja Cements stated that this significant goal not only reduces carbon emissions but also offers substantial economic benefits. In FY24, the company utilized over 8.6 million tonnes of waste-derived resources, achieving 11x water-positive and 8x plastic-negative statuses. Non-Executive Director Karan Adani emphasized that joining the AFID marks a crucial step in Ambuja's sustainability journey. He highlighted that the company’s membership will provide opportunities to leverage global industry peers' insights and share its own decarbonization approaches.

The AFID, coordinated by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), aims to enhance industry-level dialogue and cooperation, aiding companies in developing robust decarbonization strategies that align with national commitments.
