The government has rolled out mandatory quality norms for screws, aiming to curb the influx of sub-standard imports, bolster domestic manufacturing, and ensure consumer safety.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) issued the 'Cross Recessed Screws (Quality Control) Order' on September 17, making the BIS mark obligatory for production, sale, and import of screws.

This order includes 14 Indian standards for screws and will be enforced six months after notification, impacting both domestic and foreign manufacturers. Exemptions apply to certain imported goods, including research and development items.
