Tripura's Global Waterway Connectivity Drive

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced efforts to establish global waterway connectivity for Tripura. The initiative involves developing the Gomati River Waterway in South Tripura district to link with the Bay of Bengal. This project is part of connecting India's Northeast to international ports, including those in Myanmar.

On Wednesday, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal revealed the Centre's plans to establish global waterway connectivity for Tripura. The initiative aims to enhance trade and connectivity in the region.

The Union ministry of ports, shipping, and waterways is developing a waterway through the Gomati River in South Tripura district, intending to connect it with the Bay of Bengal. This project involves collaboration with Bangladesh and will extend to significant ports such as Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, and Sittwe in Myanmar.

Sittwe is an integral deep-water port within Myanmar's Rakhine state and part of India's broader Act East Policy, aiming to enhance international connectivity. Minister Sonowal emphasized the economic potential of Tripura in global markets, highlighting the construction of jetties to enable waterway transportation. He also acknowledged the strategic importance of a new fertilizer plant in Assam.
