Germany and AfDB Announce Major Energy and Private Sector Initiatives to Boost Africa's Development
Germany Partners with African Development Bank to Drive Energy Access, Youth Empowerment, and Green Infrastructure Growth in Africa.

Germany and the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) have announced ambitious joint initiatives to accelerate energy access, promote private sector growth, and support green infrastructure development across Africa. The partnership, unveiled during a high-level meeting in Abidjan last week, reinforces Germany's strategic role in Africa's sustainable development efforts. Key Focus Areas:
- Mission 300 Initiative: Enhanced support for the initiative aiming to provide electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030 through expanded financing and National Energy Compact implementations.
- Youth Entrepreneurship: Increased support for programs like Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Banks and the Build 4 Skills program to promote skills development and job creation for African youth.
- Green Infrastructure Development: The signing of significant subscription agreements under the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa (AGIA) to accelerate eco-friendly projects.
Germany's Strategic Commitment:
As the largest contributor to the 16th replenishment of the African Development Fund (AfDF) and a key shareholder in the AfDB, Germany’s contributions solidify its role as a pivotal development partner. Representatives from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) participated in the discussions.
Promoting Regional Integration and Renewable Energy: The collaboration will drive renewable energy projects and promote regional power integration, leveraging existing initiatives such as the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa and the Climate Action Window. Additionally, the partners explored opportunities for regional integration under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Leadership Remarks: “The African Development Bank values this strong demonstration of commitment and thanks Germany for its steadfast support. Together, we lay the groundwork for a brighter, more inclusive future for Africa,” said Mrs. Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, Senior Vice President of the AfDB.
BMZ Director General for Africa, Ms. Birgit Picket, emphasized the importance of scaling up development efforts and applauded the deepening cooperation between Germany and the AfDB.
The meetings also included technical sessions identifying opportunities for co-financing and joint resource mobilization strategies to advance the M300 National Energy Compacts.
The partnership underscores a shared commitment to sustainable development, regional integration, and inclusive growth, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s development journey.
