In a significant move to modernize the country's energy and logistics sectors, Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, announced the launch of a new private sector investment instrument. The initiative, revealed during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) debate in Cape Town, aims to mobilize resources for upgrading South Africa's critical infrastructure.

Dr. Ramokgopa disclosed that the new investment instrument will be introduced within the next five weeks. He emphasized its potential to serve as a template for other State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) such as Transnet to drive infrastructure investment across various sectors.

Major Energy Expansion Plans

The minister highlighted the urgent need for private sector involvement to address South Africa's energy infrastructure challenges. He noted that R450 billion is required over the next decade to expand transmission lines by 14,000 kilometers.

"The state sovereign balance sheet is weak, and Eskom's balance sheet has been eroded. We need instruments that accelerate private sector investment," said Dr. Ramokgopa.

Logistics Sector Overhaul

In addition to energy reforms, the government is targeting significant improvements in the freight logistics sector. With a baseline of 149 million tonnes per annum, the target is to increase this to 170 million tonnes within the year and reach 250 million tonnes by 2030.

The government has identified key corridors for targeted improvement:

  • Northern Cape-Saldanha Corridor: Transporting iron ore and manganese.
  • Northern Corridor: Carrying coal and chrome.
  • Gauteng-Durban Corridor: Supporting automotive and general freight.

Commitment to Transformation Amid Geopolitical Challenges Dr. Ramokgopa also addressed geopolitical concerns following the promulgation of the Expropriation Act. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to advancing transformation policies.

"We are determined to protect the gains of the democratic project. We will engage with our allies to articulate our vision for South Africa's future. The transformation project is irreversible," he asserted.

The announcement signals the government's firm stance on leveraging public-private partnerships to address economic challenges, stimulate growth, and promote inclusive development in South Africa.
