At a prominent conference in Mumbai, M Rajeshwar Rao, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, underscored the urgent need for financial institutions to invest in digital infrastructure to maintain their competitive edge. Rao, speaking at the Second Annual Conference on Macroeconomics, Banking, and Finance organized by the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode and the National Stock Exchange, highlighted the transformative shift in financial services driven by technology.
Rao articulated that while the digital era offers unmatched opportunities, financial entities must exercise caution regarding their dependence on third-party technology, ensuring that risks are adequately managed. Regulatory compliance, cybersecurity, and customer protection must be top priorities, he asserted, to cultivate a resilient financial environment.
The Deputy Governor also praised India's role in global financial innovation, mentioning landmark systems such as the Unified Payments Interface and the emerging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies. He advocated for these advancements as critical to the sector's evolution, noting a significant uptick in AI references within banks' annual reports, indicating a robust focus on tech-driven solutions.
