Botswana Seals Vital Diamond Deal with De Beers Amid Economic Challenges
Botswana's government has finalized a crucial diamond sales agreement with De Beers, aiming to revive its economy. This deal is crucial as the country's economy significantly relies on diamond exports. It increases Botswana's share of rough stones from 25% to 50% over the next decade.
Botswana has signed a pivotal diamond sales agreement with De Beers, a long-anticipated move expected to boost job creation in the struggling economy. The negotiations, ongoing since 2018, culminated in a formal agreement under the new leadership of President Duma Boko.
The agreement, seen as essential for Botswana's economic recovery, enhances the country's share of rough diamonds from its joint venture with De Beers, Debswana, to 50% over the next ten years. The mining license for Debswana has also been extended to 2054, indicating long-term plans to sustain diamond-related economic growth despite recent market challenges.
President Boko expressed optimism, underscoring the employment opportunities the deal represents for Botswana's citizens. Despite obstacles like a global diamond market downturn and the rise of lab-grown diamonds, there is hope for economic improvement this year with a stronger diamond market and better performance in other sectors.
