Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday the transformative developments spearheaded by a new semiconductor plant in Assam's Morigaon district, which is drawing investment interest from several countries.
At a semiconductor-focused session, Vaishnaw detailed further plans for Assam, including upcoming electronics manufacturing units and significant enhancements to the state’s railway infrastructure. He revealed that the initiative will elevate Assam to a key industrial hub, with additional semiconductor units anticipated soon.
International companies from Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan are poised to establish administrative offices near the new Morigaon plant, underscoring the state's burgeoning appeal. In addition to semiconductors, new establishments for electronics and mobile phone production are set to boost Assam's industrial prospects further.
In conjunction with these plans, a National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) University is set to rise in Jagiroad, and an electronics manufacturing cluster is being developed in Bongora. These initiatives signal a concerted effort by state and central authorities to invigorate the region’s technology and industrial landscapes.
Alongside industrial growth, Vaishnaw highlighted the critical role of railway development in supporting this expansion. He announced the introduction of Amrit Bharat trains and a 12-storey IT hub at Guwahati railway station, aimed at fortifying Assam’s standing as a technological center. Significant rail projects, including enhancements to connectivity and a new railway link between Assam and Bhutan, are also in progress.
In a comprehensive push for modernization, 60 of Assam's 90 railway stations will undergo upgrades to world-class standards, supported by a Rs 10,000 crore allocation from the Centre, marking a significant increase in funding for railway connectivity across Northeast India.
