Controversy Brews Over Mizoram's Airport Transition to IAF

The Mizoram government plans to transfer Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force, despite facing significant opposition. A draft memorandum of agreement is underway, while Rs 86 crore is allocated for runway upgrades. NGOs and political parties have voiced strong objections to the handover proposal.

The Mizoram government is pushing forward with a plan to transfer the state's sole airport, Lengpui, to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced that a draft memorandum of agreement is being prepared. This move, however, has sparked considerable opposition from various political and civil groups.

Answering questions from opposition member K. Laldawngliana, the chief minister stated that a reconstituted working committee is overseeing the maintenance and management details. Consultations with NGOs and civil society were conducted in January, with a focus on enhancing the airport before the next Finance Commission review.

The administration has allocated Rs 86 crore for runway enhancements, aiming to upgrade the Pavement Classification Number. Yet, protests from parties like MNF and Congress, as well as major groups like the Young Mizo Association, underscore the public's concerns over the proposed military takeover.
