In a strategic move to bolster India's trade ties with the United States, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has called a critical meeting with export councils and trade representatives. This follows his high-profile talks in Washington with top US officials, focusing on mitigating the repercussions of US tariffs on Indian exports.
The meeting will also address the troubling expansion of India's trade deficit, which climbed to USD 22 billion in January, compared to USD 16.56 billion in the same month of the previous year. The downturn in goods exports, marking a third month of decline, has necessitated urgent attention from the Indian government.
Recent discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Trump have reinvigorated prospects for a comprehensive Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). This agreement, expected to streamline market access and reduce trade barriers, is part of broader bilateral efforts to increase trade to USD 500 billion by 2030, spanning sectors like energy, defense, and technology.
