GSK's Robust Second Quarter Fuels Optimism Amid U.S. Political Challenges
British pharmaceutical giant GSK surpassed second-quarter forecasts for sales and profits, with a 6% rise in turnover strengthening confidence in its growth strategy despite geopolitical and regulatory hurdles. The firm remains focused on pipeline expansion and competitive positioning, targeting long-term sales goals despite potential U.S.-EU trade challenges.
British pharmaceutical leader GSK reported better-than-expected second-quarter sales and earnings on Wednesday, reinforcing its ambitious growth targets despite facing political and competitive challenges in the U.S. market. This performance positions GSK towards the upper end of its annual growth forecast, boosting investor confidence as the company aims for annual sales exceeding £40 billion by 2031.
Amid these positive results, GSK is focused on broadening its product pipeline to address increasing competition and dwindling top product sales, while navigating critical regulatory and legal challenges. CEO Emma Walmsley highlighted the company's continued strong momentum with another outstanding quarter, projecting a 2025 revenue increase of 3% to 5% and core profit growth per share between 6% and 8%.
Despite a nearly 2% rise in GSK shares early in the day, they later declined slightly by 0759 GMT. The company reassured stakeholders about its robust stance against financial impacts from expected U.S.-EU trade tariffs. In the second quarter, GSK's turnover increased to nearly £8 billion, with strong performances in specialty medicines and other key divisions. GSK also earmarked around £1.26 billion for legal expenses related to ongoing patent disputes with COVID vaccine producers Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna.
