Northeast Frontier Railway: Pioneering Sustainability Initiatives

Northeast Frontier Railway has partnered with IIT-Guwahati and Assam Pollution Control Board to boost sustainability efforts. Projects include transforming Guwahati Railway Station into a plastic recycling hub and introducing biodegradable bags in trains, aiming for an eco-friendly railway ecosystem.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has taken a decisive step towards environmental sustainability by entering into separate agreements with notable organizations, including IIT-Guwahati and Assam Pollution Control Board (APCB). These collaborations aim to promote eco-friendly initiatives in the railway sector.

A tripartite agreement among NFR, APCB, and Kusum Udyog aims to transform Guwahati Railway Station into a fully-functional plastic recycling hub. A dedicated task force, led by the station superintendent, will oversee the implementation of initiatives like enhanced garbage storage facilities and a compost-making plant.

Additionally, IIT-Guwahati will help NFR introduce biodegradable and compostable bags to replace those currently used for distributing bedrolls in AC coaches. The pilot project will start on the Brahmaputra Mail's Kamakhya-New Delhi route, with plans for wider network implementation.
