The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, underscored the critical need for innovation in capital markets to expand opportunities while reducing compliance costs during the 22nd Annual Capital Markets Conference (CAPAM2025) organized by FICCI. He emphasized reforms that promote faster capital formation and sustained investor engagement.
Pandey highlighted ongoing SEBI regulatory initiatives aimed at increased efficiency, such as shortening IPO timelines, embracing digital processes and implementing safeguards like blocking funds and direct payouts. An alert payment system via UPI for SEBI-registered intermediaries will be operational by October 1, 2025, enhancing protection against cyber fraud.
Exploring the dynamic landscape, he pointed out regulatory-driven innovation has birthed new asset classes like AIFs and REITs, significantly expanding India's securities market. With 13 crore unique investors and a 1.4 trillion rupee capital pipeline, Pandey reiterated the necessity of transparency for attracting long-term capital.
He urged the adoption of artificial intelligence, albeit with precautions, stressing the elimination of unnecessary processes to foster development of new product classes and bolster sustainable domestic capital amidst global uncertainties.
