In the wake of mounting protests in Peru's Cusco region, approximately 900 tourists find themselves stranded near the historic Machu Picchu site. On Tuesday, the Peruvian Tourism Minister reported that the suspension of passenger train services due to demonstrations has left these visitors in a difficult situation.

The protests erupted following the termination of Consettur's bus service concession, a company responsible for transporting tourists from Aguas Calientes to the Inca citadel. Local residents have voiced concerns over transparency in the selection of a new service provider, complicating efforts to replace Consettur and disrupting transport to Peru's famous cultural landmark.

Further complicating the situation, PeruRail cited damages to the railway, allegedly caused by third parties, affecting the evacuation process. The escalating conflict has drawn the attention of international heritage organizations, who warn that Machu Picchu's reputation might suffer if the situation is not resolved promptly.
