The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has endorsed the Department of Telecommunications' (DoT) latest directive, which calls for a binding link between SIM cards and app-based communication services. This groundbreaking decision is seen as a key move to enhance national security and safeguard Indian citizens from cyber threats.
This regulation mandates that communication apps must remain continually connected to the SIM card linked with the user's mobile number, ensuring accountability and traceability for all activities conducted. COAI asserts that this continuous connection will close existing gaps that have allowed for anonymity and misuse in the past.
Currently, app-based services only link to a user's SIM during the initial setup. COAI believes that by enforcing continuous connectivity, the potential for fraud and misuse will decrease significantly. The association is urging the Department of Telecommunications to ensure these measures are implemented across all communication apps for maximum consumer protection.
