Mumbai Metro has broken new ground by installing an indigenously developed AI-based Wheel Profile Measurement System (AWPMS), designed to improve railway safety and efficiency. This state-of-the-art system identifies wear and tear or damage and proactively recommends repair or replacement, marking a significant enhancement in maintenance capabilities.
The installation, carried out by IntelliRail, a specialist in AI-driven diagnostic tools for railways, spans two routes on the Mumbai Metro. The system not only extends wheel lifespan but also reduces track stress, thanks to its network of trackside sensors leveraging lasers and cameras for precise data gathering.
IntelliRail's WPMS, showcasing a shift from traditional periodic to modern condition-based maintenance, highlights India's move toward unmanned train operations and the broader implementation of remote monitoring technologies. The initiative aligns with the 'Make in India' mandate, promising to take IntelliRail's innovations global.
