In November, India's consumer confidence experienced subtle yet distinct shifts, according to recent surveys by the Reserve Bank of India. The Urban Consumer Confidence Survey indicated a slight improvement in confidence among city dwellers, with the Current Situation Index rising to 98.4 from 96.9, suggesting enhanced perceptions of prices and the general economy. Although concerns around employment and expenditure persisted, urban areas saw gradual progress, as reflected in the Future Expectations Index climbing to 125.6, signifying optimism for the upcoming year.
One significant factor in this uplift was the reduced negativity towards inflation, as respondents anticipated a continued easing of price pressures. While employment views largely remained constant, there was an upbeat outlook for future job prospects despite unchanged current sentiments. Income perspectives saw a modest increase, and while current essential spending dipped — attributed to reduced price-induced spending — expectations for non-essential expenditures crept upwards, keeping overall future spending stable.
Conversely, in rural India, the confidence levels persisted as before, with the Current Situation Index remaining above neutral for consecutive terms. Rural households did not perceive a dramatic shift in their everyday conditions. However, there remained a positive stance on employment and spending areas despite slightly weaker income and price perceptions. Future expectations in rural regions projected enhanced job opportunities and a softer price landscape, with the Future Expectations Index recording a mild uptick, correlating with diminishing inflation concerns.
