The European Commission is contemplating a compensation scheme that might allow car manufacturers to continue selling combustion-engine vehicles beyond the proposed 2035 ban, according to Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper.
The scheme would let up to 30% of climate objectives be achieved with alternative fuels while 70% would rely on green steel, the report revealed. This arises as the European Commission prepares to present its legislative proposal.
Lobbying from Germany, Italy, and the automotive sector has seemingly swayed the Commission to adjust its initial full ban proposal. Sources suggest this mechanism might ensure a 90% reduction in emissions through the sale of combustion-engine vehicles with CO2 offsets.
