In a bid to fortify the security infrastructure of the nation's ports, the government has announced the formation of a statutory body known as the Bureau of Port Security. This body aims to facilitate the timely analysis, collection, and exchange of security-related information regarding ports and vessels, officials reported on Friday.
This development follows a meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which was attended by Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, and Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu. The purpose was to discuss the establishment of the Bureau of Port Security, focusing on constructing a comprehensive and robust security framework across the country's ports.
Modeled after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, this new entity will operate under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It will feature a cybersecurity division and be led by a senior IPS officer. The CISF has been designated to conduct security evaluations, while CAPF will train private agencies involved in port security.
