A deadly train derailment occurred in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday, killing at least 32 people and injuring 66 when a construction crane fell on two carriages. The train was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani when it derailed in Nakhon Ratchasima province, according to the regional governor.
Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed the train carried 195 passengers and announced a thorough investigation into the incident. The crane, part of a high-speed rail project, collapsed and struck the moving train, which briefly caught fire, intensifying the disaster.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered the State Railway of Thailand to ensure compensation for victims' families and insisted on a legal inquiry. The Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, responsible for the rail segment's construction, expressed regret and pledged compensation. Recovery efforts are ongoing to restore the crucial rail route.
