Silencing Violations: Delhi's Battle Against Noise and Traffic Chaos

A parliamentary panel has flagged the rampant use of modified or non-standard silencers in motorcycles in Delhi, urging tighter enforcement and penalties to curb this violation. The committee, led by BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agrawal, emphasized the excessive noise these silencers produce, causing significant disturbance to commuters and residents.

The committee's report also highlighted rising instances of unnecessary honking, contributing to noise pollution and public inconvenience, particularly near schools, hospitals, and residential areas. It advised the Delhi Police to focus on such violations, especially in designated 'No-Horn Zones,' and to run awareness campaigns to discourage non-essential honking.

Furthermore, the panel recommended a comprehensive approach to address begging at traffic signals, which poses safety risks and disrupts traffic flow. It also identified 62 major traffic congestion points in Delhi, suggesting a coordinated, time-bound action plan and the deployment of traffic flying squads at peak hours. The Ministry of Home Affairs is working on an Intelligent Traffic Management System to mitigate these issues.
