Speed Check: Maharashtra Police Launch High-Tech Highway Surveillance

The Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police have initiated a six-month camera-based speed enforcement pilot on the Mumbai-Nashik highway, aiming to curb over-speeding and enhance road safety. Using advanced cameras, the project targets reducing accidents through efficient monitoring and collaboration with the Global Road Safety Partnership.

The Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police have embarked on a new road safety initiative, launching a comprehensive camera-based speed enforcement pilot project along the Mumbai-Nashik highway. This six-month trial is strategically implemented to tackle over-speeding, particularly between Shahapur in Thane district and Ghoti in Nashik district, areas notorious for frequent accidents.

Praveen Salunke, the Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), emphasized that state-of-the-art hand-held speed enforcement cameras are now operational at various earmarked locations. These technological marvels can detect high-speed violations effectively, even under adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain and nighttime darkness.

The project is a collaborative endeavor with the Global Road Safety Partnership, bolstered by the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety. Comprehensive training for traffic personnel ensures adept handling of the equipment, promising a significant plunge in road accident fatalities, which stats attribute 70% to speeding mishaps.
