Trailblazer Krishnamurthy V Subramanian Honored with Prestigious Alumni Award

The University of Chicago has honored India’s former chief economic adviser, Krishnamurthy V Subramanian, with its prestigious Alumni Award for Professional Achievement. Subramanian is the first Indian economist to receive this honor since the award's creation in 1941, joining ranks with notable figures like Nobel laureates Paul Samuelson and Gary Becker.

Subramanian expressed profound humility at being part of such an esteemed academic line. He emphasized that the recognition is significant because it applauds work done from and for India, following the paths of pioneers like C V Raman and M S Swaminathan.

His tenure as chief economic adviser saw him as a key economic voice during the COVID-19 pandemic, crafting landmark Economic Surveys and advocating for a V-shaped economic recovery, pivotal to India's pandemic resilience. Despite his early departure as IMF executive director last year, Subramanian's influence endures through his policy contributions.
