Stop Misusing Train Emergency Chains: Railways Warns

The Delhi Rail Division reported the arrest of 5,180 people in 2025 for misuse of train emergency chains. The practice disrupts railway operations and is a punishable offence under the Railways Act. Railways urge passengers to use chains solely for genuine emergencies and discourage frivolous use.

The Delhi Rail Division announced that 5,180 individuals were arrested in 2025 for misusing the alarm chain on trains. This alarming statistic highlights the ongoing issue of passengers pulling the emergency chains for non-emergency reasons, which significantly disrupts train schedules.

Chief Public Relation Officer, Himanshu Shekhar Upadhya, stated that alarm chain misuse affects punctuality not only for a single train but also causes a ripple effect, delaying multiple services. In the first four months of 2026, a further 1,483 individuals faced arrest for similar violations.

Railways have emphasized the consequences of this misuse, citing penalties under Section 141 of the Railways Act, which include fines and imprisonment. Passengers are urged to reserve alarm chain use for genuine emergencies and to arrive at stations well in advance to ensure prompt departures.
