Soaring Over the Waves: Seaplane Trials Elevate Lakshadweep Tourism

CIAL successfully conducted seaplane trials between Kochi and Lakshadweep islands, aiming to boost regional air connectivity and tourism. Three operations utilized the Twin Otter aircraft, indicating future opportunities for enhanced inter-island transport and emergency access. Further trials are scheduled, involving multiple islands and fostering sustainable tourism development.

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) achieved a significant milestone by successfully facilitating seaplane trial operations to the Lakshadweep islands. This initiative aims to enhance regional air connectivity and promote island tourism by deploying the DHC6-400 Twin Otter aircraft for test flights.

The trial operations involved departures from Kochi to Agatti, training sorties at Agatti's water aerodrome, and return flights, taking place over a single-day schedule. The deployed seaplane accommodates 19 passengers and complies with category-specific rescue and firefighting service requirements.

Future trials are slated for May 2026, encompassing Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kadmat, and Kiltan islands. CIAL views this development as pivotal in fostering sustainable tourism, boosting inter-island connectivity, and enhancing emergency accessibility within the Union Territory.
