Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries chairman, Ravindra Sathe, has called for the implementation of an integrated beekeeping policy in the state. He emphasized the need for a dedicated registration portal to track honey production and bring formality to the apiary sector, which remains largely undocumented.
Sathe revealed that Maharashtra produced nearly 1.75 lakh metric tonnes of honey last year. A significant portion, 40% to be exact, was contributed by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission. However, the state lacks precise data on the number of beekeepers, thus highlighting the need for an integrated policy. He cited Israel's successful implementation of a similar strategy as a potential model.
Challenges such as climatic conditions affecting bee activity, especially during the monsoon, were also discussed. Coordinating with agricultural universities, the government is devising a roadmap for the sector. The initiative includes training programs, subsidies for bee colonies, and development projects under 'Madhu Gram,' aiming to empower the beekeeping community and boost its economic potential through byproducts like propolis and royal jelly.
