Indian Airlines Reduce Flights Amid High Fuel Costs

Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express are temporarily cutting domestic flights by up to 22% due to rising fuel costs and reduced travel demand. This strategic shift aims to balance operations until conditions improve, with possibilities for flight restoration when the environment stabilizes.

Major Indian airlines including Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express are set to decrease their domestic flight schedules by up to 22% in response to escalating jet fuel costs and a dip in travel demand. Officials have highlighted that these measures will impact flights planned for the upcoming months.

The recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia have compounded challenges for airlines, leading to increased operational costs due to fuel price hikes and restricted airspace. Consequently, these carriers are strategically realigning their schedules to better manage resources and cope with economic pressures.

Air India plans to scale back its domestic operations by 20-22% in June and July, while Air India Express aims for a 10% reduction in June. IndiGo, in turn, will cut 12-15% of its domestic services in the September quarter. Collectively, these reductions align with their previous summer schedules.

These airlines emphasize that such adjustments are unavoidable under current conditions but intend to restore service levels once economic stability returns. Air India indicated that passengers affected by these changes will receive assistance via alternative bookings or refunds. Amid rising costs, Air India Express has also been optimizing its network to maintain viable operations.
