A Railway Board panel in India has pointed out significant drawbacks in current railway operations, citing that a shortage of reserve coaches and delays in coach rearrangement harm both punctuality and service quality. The committee aims to address these issues through a comprehensive report on the requirements for mega coaching depots.

Frequent train delays stem from inefficient shunting processes as trains are moved across lines and rearranged. This inefficiency often stems from poor planning, resulting in further disruptions. The committee recommends setting up mega coaching depots to streamline operations and enhance service standards by maintaining train integrity through consistent rake formations.

The report highlights ongoing challenges like the necessity of coach cannibalisation due to the unavailability of spare coaches, which disturbs the uniform standard of trains. The new proposal involves mega depots with capacities exceeding 1,500 coaches, ensuring the availability and efficient management of resources.

Under the new plan, various rail services will be centralized in these depots, improving train handling by treating them as entire rake sets rather than individual coaches. This change promises to enhance maintenance schedules and ensure consistent coach quality, addressing existing operational inefficiencies.
