The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has rapidly handled over 2 million TEUs since beginning operations in July 2024. This milestone makes it the fastest Indian port to reach such numbers. With ongoing expansion plans, the port aims to reduce India's reliance on foreign transshipment hubs.

Vizhinjam International Seaport, managed by the Adani Group, has swiftly processed over 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within just 18 months, making it the quickest facility in India to hit this milestone.
According to Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, the seaport reached 1 million TEUs by August 2025, doubling within months of launching trial operations in July 2024. This achievement positions Vizhinjam as a key transshipment hub linking South Asia with several global regions.
The port is strategically located near a major international shipping route, which enhances transit efficiency and reduces fuel costs for shipping operators. As global trade adapts to geopolitical tensions, Vizhinjam's stature in retaining India's transshipment cargo domestically is set to grow.
Phase II of its development, involving an investment of Rs 16,000 crore, is anticipated to conclude by 2028, significantly boosting the seaport's container handling capacity. This development is crucial for India's aim to minimize reliance on overseas cargo hubs.
Notably, APSEZ has also made strides by becoming the first Indian entity to manage over 500 million metric tonnes of cargo within a single year.
