India's Green Leap: Launch of Hero MotoCorp's Flex-Fuel Motorcycles

Hero MotoCorp has launched India's first flex-fuel motorcycles, developed entirely in Jaipur. These ethanol-powered models promise to cut crude oil imports, enhance air quality in cities, and boost the rural economy. Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the transformative potential, outlining India’s biofuel-driven future.

In a significant advancement for India's green economy, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled Hero MotoCorp's first flex-fuel motorcycles on Wednesday. These ethanol-powered two-wheelers aim to reduce the country’s hefty crude oil import bill, enhance urban air quality, and channel fuel expenditures back into the agrarian economy.

Hero MotoCorp's Centre for Innovation & Technology (CIT) in Jaipur developed the flex-fuel versions of the iconic Splendor+ and HF Deluxe models. Capable of running on both conventional petrol and ethanol blends, these bikes represent a milestone in India's automotive evolution. Additionally, Gadkari hinted at flex-fuel's rapid integration into the passenger car market, with Maruti Suzuki set to launch its first flex-fuel engine vehicle imminently.

Gadkari underscored the urgency of reducing India's dependency on fossil fuel imports, which currently stands at a staggering 87 percent. He emphasized the virtues of ethanol as a green and cost-effective alternative, with performance metrics akin to conventional fuels. As India scales up its ethanol production from diverse agricultural sources, the move signals a strategic pivot towards sustainably securing energy and supporting rural development.
