In a significant boost to India's energy ambitions, Oil India Ltd announced the discovery of natural gas in the Andaman Offshore Basin on Friday. Located 15 km off the east coast of the Andaman Islands, the find underscores the country's untapped hydrocarbon potential.

The discovery from the exploratory well Sri Vijayapuram-3, drilled at a 355-meter water depth, reveals a promising future for natural gas extraction in the region. Initial tests indicate successful continuous flaring at a depth exceeding 1,900 meters.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared the news on X, highlighting the energy opportunities in the Andaman Sea. Currently, Oil India is analyzing gas samples to determine composition and energy content, while exploring further collaborations with global deepwater players to expand India's offshore exploration capacity.

Oil India's commitment to enhancing technological capabilities in partnership with Petrobras, TotalEnergies, bp, Shell, and ExxonMobil, signifies a robust strategy to assess the commercial viability of the Andaman Basin as a potential gas province. This initiative, part of the Samudra Manthan Mission, aligns with India's energy security goal during its 'Amrit Kaal'.

If proven commercially viable, this discovery could significantly contribute to domestic gas supplies, reducing the nation's reliance on imports, and marking a critical step in India's pursuit of sustainable energy independence.
