Chile's Inflation Slows: Key Trends in Pricing
Consumer prices in Chile saw a slight rise of 0.2% in May, falling short of expectations. Food and drink prices led the decline, while housing and transport sectors saw increases. Annual inflation edged down, yet remained at the upper limit of central bank targets.
Consumer prices in Chile have experienced a minor rise of 0.2% in May, according to data released by the statistics agency INE on Monday. This increment fell below the forecasted 0.4% increase by a Reuters poll of economists.
A deceleration in inflation was noted following a significant 1.3% rise observed in April. Among the 13 sectors surveyed, nine reported price decreases, with food and non-alcoholic beverages seeing the most notable drop at 0.8%.
Furthermore, INE highlighted that price upticks in housing and essential services were prominent, alongside a rise in transportation costs. In May, annual inflation in the leading copper-producing nation was reported at 3.9%, slightly declining from April's 4%. This figure aligns with the central bank's upper target, while interest rates remain unchanged at 4.5% due to ongoing concerns over fuel prices and geopolitical tensions.
