A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday, resulting in a death toll of at least 32 and injuring numerous individuals, according to disaster officials. The quake prompted swift search and rescue operations by Manila.
The seismic event, which triggered tsunami warnings in several countries, took place early in the morning approximately 20 km off the coast of Sarangani province. Its impact was felt strongly across Mindanao and even as far as 420 km away in Manado, Indonesia. Residents in General Santos City, the worst-hit area, were overcome with fear as tremors described as unprecedented rattled their city.
In the wake of the disaster, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assured the nation of prompt disaster responses and relief efforts. The quake, that severely damaged buildings and disrupted utilities, was followed by more than 200 aftershocks on Mindanao, exacerbating the chaos and impact on local infrastructure.
