India is witnessing a complex shift in its crime landscape, with overall criminal activities showing a decline attributed to enhanced surveillance, increased public investment, and digital advancements. However, the State Bank of India (SBI) report highlights a contrasting rise in cyber-crime, potentially surpassing 100,000 cases.

According to the report, in 2024, India recorded 58.86 lakh cognizable crimes, marking a 6% decrease compared to the previous year. The all-India crime rate fell from 448.3 to 418.9 per lakh population. Notably, crimes against women dropped slightly by 1.5% from 4.48 lakh cases in 2023 to 4.41 lakh cases in 2024.

The digitization of financial transactions through tools like UPI and FASTag, along with increased CCTV surveillance, contributes to higher crime detection rates. The establishment of Integrated Command and Control Centres in all Smart Cities further supports real-time monitoring and data integration, aiming to enhance urban management.

The report explores the relationship between crime and economic growth, suggesting a negative impact on economic stability and growth. It posits that a 1% decline in crime rates could result in a 0.11% rise in real GDP growth over the short term, highlighting the economic benefits of reducing crime.

Crimes against women remain a significant issue, with 1,20,227 cases recorded in 2024 under cruelty by husband or relatives. This suggests that women's safety issues persist and impact the labor market, as seen in lower female workforce participation. The estimated annual burden of violence against women remains substantial, underscoring the societal challenge.
