Kerala Rail Network Boosted by Rs 220 Cr Expansion Project

The Indian Railways has approved a Rs 220.51 crore expansion project for the Mararikulam-Alappuzha section in Kerala. The initiative aims to double the track, facilitating increased train capacity, reducing delays, and enhancing punctuality. Upon completion, it will enable 9 additional passenger trains and support 2.88 MTPA freight traffic.

In a significant development for Kerala's railway network, the Indian Railways has sanctioned a project worth Rs 220.51 crore to expand the 10.65-km Mararikulam-Alappuzha section. This decision, announced by the Ministry of Railways, aims to double the tracks under Southern Railway, enhancing both passenger and freight movement efficiencies.

Currently, the Mararikulam-Alappuzha stretch remains the only single-line track on the Ernakulam-Kayankulam corridor. The new project is part of a broader initiative to double, triple, and even quadruple certain rail sections, improving the railway network's overall capacity, according to official statements.

Upon completion, the project is expected to permit 9 additional passenger trains daily and accommodate 2.88 MTPA in freight, yielding an annual net revenue increase of approximately Rs 3.08 crore. The initiative is also anticipated to reduce train detentions and bolster connectivity and punctuality throughout the region.
