BP has announced the appointment of Gordon Birrell to head its upstream unit, while Richard Harding will serve as interim head of the downstream segment. This leadership restructuring is part of BP's broader strategy to revitalize investor confidence by trimming expenses and concentrating on its fundamental oil and gas sectors.

The upstream division will consolidate BP's oil and gas ventures, encompassing exploration, development, and production, as well as renewable natural gas and carbon capture enterprises. The downstream segment will focus on refining, pipelines, biofuels, and the company's Castrol lubricants brand.

Operationally, the new structure will be implemented from July 1, with the external financial reporting setup scheduled for January 1, 2027. Birrell, a BP veteran, takes over from a series of leadership roles, following the departure of Emma Delaney, the company's former customers and products leader.
