India Eyes Integrated Bioenergy Approach to Boost Energy Security
India is exploring an integrated strategy to enhance its bioenergy sector, aiming to bolster energy security and decrease crude oil imports. NITI Aayog's Rajnath Ram discussed ongoing efforts at the India Bioenergy Conference, highlighting the potential impact of biofuels on transport and the importance of addressing sectoral challenges.
In a move to fortify energy security and reduce reliance on crude oil imports, the Indian government is contemplating an integrated approach to the bioenergy ecosystem. Speaking at the India Bioenergy Conference, Rajnath Ram, Advisor for Energy at NITI Aayog, revealed ongoing talks aimed at expanding the sector's role in the national energy landscape.
The current geopolitical situation underscores the critical need for diverse energy sources, according to Ram. With 70% of fuel consumption rooted in the transport sector, biofuels such as ethanol and SAF are seen as pivotal in curbing fossil fuel imports and enhancing supply stability.
The government has introduced E20 fuel and is evaluating higher ethanol blends, including E85 and E100. Ram emphasized the necessity of overcoming challenges related to project bankability, supply chains, and infrastructure to maximize bioenergy's impact on India's energy future.
