In a historic move poised to significantly boost India's energy independence, a landmark agreement was signed on Thursday to advance energy exploration at the Assam-Nagaland border. The ceremony was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, along with the Chief Ministers of Nagaland and Assam.
This agreement, finalized under the strategic direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to kickstart exploration across more than 1,000 square kilometres, a region rich in energy and mineral reserves. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed this as a crucial step in unearthing the region's untapped potential.
Emphasizing investment prospects, officials believe this initiative will act as a catalyst for economic expansion in the North East, concurrently reinforcing India's energy self-reliance goals. Chief Minister Sarma lauded the agreement as evidence of the central government's resolve to address longstanding regional issues, heralding a 'new era' for the North East.
