In May 2026, urban unemployment rates fell to their lowest point in a year, declining to 6.4% from 6.6% the previous month, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. This decline is set against a backdrop of mixed labour market signals as overall employment participation has eased.

The Periodic Labour Force Survey noted that the Labour Force Participation Rate for individuals aged 15 and above decreased to 54.4% in May 2026, down from 55.0% in April 2026. The urban participation rate also mirrored this trend, falling by 0.6 percentage points over the year, reflecting seasonal fluctuations affecting the hiring momentum.

The report highlighted a contrasting trend in rural and urban job markets. While urban joblessness decreased, rural unemployment slightly rose to 5.1% in May from April's 4.6%. The moderation in employment indicators points to a contraction in job opportunities due to seasonal factors, influencing the overall labour market outlook.
