The European Parliament has given its nod to Brussels' trade deal with the United States, a move deemed critical by German automakers who are seeking clarity in this uncertain landscape. However, high trade barriers, especially the tariffs on trucks, remain a significant hurdle, as stated by an industry organization on Tuesday.

The German VDA automotive association emphasized the urgent need for the European Council to formally adopt the EU-US trade deal. 'Reliable operating conditions are of paramount importance to our companies,' VDA President Hildegard Mueller highlighted in a statement to Reuters. She pointed out the challenges posed by the current U.S. tariffs of 15% on passenger cars and their components, which continue to be a substantial obstacle for the German automotive sector.

Mueller further advocated for solutions benefiting commercial vehicle manufacturers, who are severely impacted by a 25% tariff rate for trucks and an additional 10% for buses. 'These tariffs undermine investment and jobs in the U.S., weaken supply chains, inflate costs across the entire value chain, and eventually burden consumers,' Mueller added.
