With nearly 334 projects, Maharashtra tops the list of the top 10 states for 'leadership in energy and environmental design' (LEED) ratings, released by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Monday. According to the survey, from the states mapped, Maharashtra tops the list with 334 LEED certified projects, followed by Karnataka with 232 projects, Tamil Nadu (157) and Haryana (125). Tamil Nadu ranked first last year.

"India is a leader in green buildings, and continues to demonstrate year-on-year growth," USGBC and GBCI managing director for Southeast Asia and Middle East Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan said.

He further said many Central government agencies and states have started offering incentives for LEED, and businesses, educational institutions and nonprofits across every sector are adopting it. According to the survey, with 82 projects, UP ranks fifth followed by Telangana (91 projects but the lower gross certified area, as the gross sqft area certified in UP, is higher than that of Telangana.
