LS Speaker meets counterparts from Tanzania, Zanzibar

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday met Speakers of Parliaments of Tanzania and Zanzibar in Dar es Salaam, according to an official statement released here.
Birla, who is on a visit to East African nations, held discussions with Tulia Ackson, the Speaker of Parliament of Tanzania and thanked her for the warm welcome accorded to the Indian Parliamentary delegation, which was on the first-ever visit in the last 50 years.
Birla said the partnership of India and Tanzania on the economic front will fuel growth in both the countries. He said it was a matter of pride that the first IIT outside India, was being set up in Tanzania.
“This will help in the development of human resources of Tanzania,” he said.
Birla apprised Ackson about India's G20 Presidency and noted that New Delhi will make efforts to put forth the concerns of developing countries and global south at the forum.
Birla also met Zubeir Alil Maulid, the Speaker of Zanzibar House of Representatives.
During his deliberations with Maulid, Birla recalled the age-old relationship between India and Zanzibar.
He noted that Indian traders have been visiting Zanzibar for centuries and that the country was home to a large Indian diaspora.
Birla and the Parliamentary delegation also visited the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Dar es Salaam and offered tributes to the fallen Indian soldiers during the First World War.
