Revamping Engineering Curriculum to Meet Industry Demands

G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant emphasized the need to revamp engineering curriculums in India to meet industry demands, particularly in high-demand areas like AI, machine learning, and cybersecurity. He highlighted government initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and supporting startups, underlining the importance of R&D and entrepreneurship in advancing the nation's technological landscape.

G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant has called for a total overhaul of the engineering curriculum in Indian colleges and IITs to align with contemporary industry demands. Speaking at the India Global Innovation Connect (IGIC) 2024 in Bengaluru, Kant stressed the urgent need to bridge the gap between industry requirements and the talent pool, especially in high-demand sectors such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and cybersecurity.

'The current curriculum needs comprehensive restructuring to meet today's industrial needs. The government aims to address this by focusing on skilling and apprenticeship programs over the next five years to generate a vast number of new jobs,' said Kant.

Kant also highlighted India's potential to become a global innovation hub, initiating significant reforms in research and development. With a Rs 1 lakh crore fund set to be unveiled soon, the initiative aims to bolster the manufacturing sector, particularly in semiconductor design, positioning Karnataka's Mysore belt as a leading ecosystem. Experts at the event also emphasized the critical role of technology and supporting startups in driving future growth.
