In a significant development, retired Madras High Court Judge Justice A K Rajan has urged the Tamil Nadu government to abolish the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), recommending legal and legislative measures to achieve this. His proposals include using higher secondary examination marks as the sole criteria for medical college admissions, aimed at promoting equality and social justice.
The recommendations came after a high-level committee, led by Rajan, conducted an in-depth study on NEET’s impact, finding it detrimental to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The report, filled with extensive data and public input, calls for the normalization of scores across different education boards to level the playing field for all students.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable student communities. He announced that the state assembly has unanimously passed a bill seeking exemption from NEET, which now awaits the President's assent.
