A teacher at a private law college linked to the University of Calcutta resigned following allegations that the institution requested her to refrain from wearing a hijab at work.
As public outrage grew, college officials stated it was a miscommunication, and the teacher, Sanjida Qadar, will return after withdrawing her resignation. Qadar, who had worn the hijab at her workplace since March-April, resigned on June 5. The controversy escalated last week.
Qadar cited the governing body's instructions as offensive to her values and religious sentiments. However, the college authorities clarified they had not banned head coverings and stated the misunderstanding arose from a miscommunication. College governing body chairman Gopal Das emphasized respect for religious sentiments and confirmed Qadar's return to the classroom.
