Delhi University's Vice-Chancellor, Yogesh Singh, announced on Thursday that the proposal to teach 'Manusmriti' to LLB students has been rejected. The initial suggestion was made by the Faculty of Law to revise the jurisprudence paper's syllabus.
Despite its submission, the proposal, which aimed to introduce readings from 'Manusmriti' and was set for discussion on Friday, faced swift criticism. A section of teachers argued that the text is regressive towards women and marginalized communities.
Left-backed Social Democratic Teachers Front (SDTF) vehemently opposed the move, stating that it contradicts the principles of the Indian Constitution. The proposal was ultimately turned down, reaffirming the commitment to a progressive education system.
